Author Comment: This story is very short. It is my way of rationalizing something that has kept playing on my mind since seeing the episode "Obsession". I would love the feedback. By the way, I want to thank all of the wonderful people who took the time to comment on my previous stories. SPECIAL THANKS to Darla who rides every journey with me. Vin stared out at the valley below him. It was well after midnight, but he had been unable to sleep. There was one thing playing on his mind that he just couldn’t put to rest. One thing he simply couldn’t understand. Vin picked up a piece of grass and placed it been his teeth. His mind was in turmoil as he struggled to come to terms with the events of the day before. Vin shook his head. Why had he missed? He’d had Ella Gaines in his sights. Hell, she’d been less than twelve feet away. The episode replayed in his mind for the hundredth time. Why had he missed? He’d yelled to Chris to get down. Stupid bastard didn‘t listen! He never missed. It was his livelihood. He was a sharpshooter! Why had he missed? He’d seen Chris hit - the bullet spinning his best friend to the right. He’d even been stationary - not on the run. An easy shot. Why had he missed? Chris was lying there bleeding. How badly was he hurt? Ella had paused on the horse. He had lifted his rifle and sighted her. Why had he missed? Chris was on the ground at his feet. Was it a surface wound? Had the bullet done any serious damage? It had been an essential shot. With it he could have achieved justice for Larabee. It was such a routine shot! Why had he missed? Chris was hit. Bleeding. How bad? He’d made much more difficult shots. Shots on the run. Shots from twenty times the distance. Why had he missed? He couldn’t see Nathan. Chris was down. Laying on the ground bleeding! Vin shook his head again. He’d been totally focused on that one shot, so why the hell had he missed?!
